Big congratulations to Bookend's ANTARCTIC EXPERIENCE winners:
  • Callum Poke (Smithton High) - submitted an Antarctic diorama - wins the tour of the Australian Antarctic Division facilities, meetings with researchers, and the 12hr FLIGHT OVER ANTARCTICA itself.
  • Nicholas Bochenek (Newstead College) - submitted a poem, "Truly Alive" - wins a family pass for one of Pennicott Wilderness Journeys multi-award winning three hour wilderness cruises, plus the opportunity to join the tour of the Australian Antarctic Division facilities and meetings with researchers.

2013-2014 Summer Project: an Antarctic Experience for Tasmanian Students.

Bookend is pleased to offer Tasmanian students an opportunity to participate in the 2014 Antarctic Experience. This unique program aims to raise student awareness of environmental issues, especially climate change and related sciences, and furthering a commitment to environmental and youth leadership.

The Antarctic Experience is an exciting environmental education and youth leadership opportunity for Tasmanian secondary students and offers the possibility an unforgettable flight over Antarctica*. While the Antarctic prize is available for students of upper secondary age (15yrs+), alternative Southern Ocean cruise experiences are available lower secondary (12-14yrs) and primary students.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO DO?

Follow the short daily blogs of painter and sculptor John Kelly, the 2013 Australian Antarctic Arts Fellow, as he experiences Antarctica for the first time. Using John’s words as your inspiration, submit an original creative response on your feelings about Antarctica. This could be in the form of a painting, sculpture, poem, or short story (no more than 500 words), short video or animation (no more the 3 mins) or whatever your imagination is able to create to tell your story or convey your feelings about the frozen continent.

The most original or effective creative entry in each age group will win prizes as below!

The four day program from 14 to 17 February 2014 includes a tour of the Australian Antarctic Division facilities, meetings with researchers and culminates in a 12hr flight over Antarctica. The program is open to all Tasmanian students over 15yrs of age, and interstate or overseas students of similar age by arrangement.

Runners up will be able to attend an invitation-only open day at the Australian Antarctic Division on 14 February 2014

Friday 14 February 2014 - Hobart: Visit the Headquarters of the Australian Antarctic Division to meet researchers and tour facility.

Saturday 15 February 2014 - Fly to Melbourne, departing Hobart 9:50am (exact time subject to change), visit to Melbourne Museum and ACMI,

Sunday 16 February 2014 - Qantas Special Antarctic Flight

Monday 17 February 2014 - Return flight to Hobart, departing Melbourne 3:50pm (exact time subject to change).

Supervision will be provided by Calvin Christian School teacher David Dieckfoss and support staff.

Accommodation: Trinity College, Parkville, Vic 3052

TERMS AND CONDITIONS:

  • * Antarctic flight only available to those students aged 15yrs and over as of 14 Feb 2014. The successful student joins a team of up to 10 other students from across Tasmania on a chaperoned 2 night trip to Melbourne, Australia which includes a 12 hour flight over Antarctica. Dates for the 4 day Antarctic Experience including the Antarctic flight are fixed to 14-17 February 2014. For itinerary and further details CLICK HERE
  • Pennicott Wilderness Journeys three hour cruise valid for 12 months from announcement of the winners and redeemable for Bruny Island or Tasman Island Cruises only. Pennicott Wilderness Journey three hour cruise redeemable for 2pm cruise only during January and February. Family pass consists of 2 adults and up to 3 children under the age of 16.
  • The above prizes are available for Tasmanian primary and secondary students. Interstate and overseas students of comparable age may also enter provided they register with the competition in advance of submitting entries, and, if they win, agree to cover their own travel to/from the departure point of the main prizes.
  • Entry for ALL students is subject to parental or guardian approval.
  • Paintings, sculptures and other 3 dimensional art work maybe submitted as a photograph.
  • Judges' decision is final, no correspondence will be entered into regarding the successful entries.
  • Numbers of Runners Up may vary across the levels of competition subject to availability of places.
